Forest developments under wasteland development programmes were successfully implemented by MCRC in various regions of Tamil Nadu. Soil eroded lands, degraded lands, problematic lands and wasted lands were developed using suitable environment management practices. The various plants used in the afforestation and wasteland development some of them are as follows, Jatropha curcas, Acacia holocericea, Acacia concinna, Hemidesmus indicus, Gloriosa superba, Simaruba glauca, Palmyrah, Agaves, Vinca rosea, many forest tree and grass species. The project was executed in Virudunagar, Rajapalayam and Sankarankoil areas of Tamil Nadu. Soil erosion by wind is an adverse microclimatic factor of specific locations in peninsular India. One such region skirts the eastern face of the Western Ghats in South Tamil Nadu. After obtaining an over view of the various problems facing this region, MCRC raised a series of shelterbelts, 11.5. Km. long. As a consequence, a great degree of protection has been afforded to an area of approximately 192 hectares in the most vulnerable foothill areas of the Western Ghats prone to devastation by wind erosion as a result of large scale deforestation. The species planted in the shelterbelts were, Dalbergia sissoo, Inga dulce, Kubabul, Bamboo, Casurina, Teak, Dichrostachys glomerata, Brasilette mollis, Colophospermum mopane and Acacia saliena. Planting 11.5 km of shelterbelts reclaimed nearly 430 acres of land in North Devadanam village, Rajapalayam Taluk, Virudhunagar district. Likewise 112 acres of land between Sethur and Soaliseri villages was planted with tamarind and 1200 acres of wasteland from Devadanam to Sankarankoil of the same district were reclaimed. In 1990, Indira Priyadharshini Vrikshamitra Award for Environment was awarded for this excellent work carried out in those districts.
